The software will scan any files that get through the device, either from infrared, Bluetooth, WiFi, or cellular. Virus definitions can be updated automatically over-the-air (OTA). However, you will only receive one year of updates when you purchase the product. If you want to continue with the update, you may have to pay another subscription fee.
