HDV showdown: Canon HV10 vs. Sony HC3
Tuesday, 05-September-2006, 00:32:05 Sony's been doing this for a while, but Canon just finally jumped into the consumer HD game with their new HV10 HDV cam. To see how they well they've managed, David Pogue over at the New York Times got ahold of the camera and pitted it against Sony's latest: the HDR-HC3. He doesn't go so far as to name a victor, but the Canon does come out looking pretty good. With the recent bouts of HD-induced nausea consumers have been experiencing lately, Canon stuffed in an extra external auto-focusing sensor for near instant focus with quick camera moves. They also threw in some optical image stabilisation, and Pogue found both features quite effective. (1065 clicks)
Sony HDR-HC3 HDV 1080i Handycam
Sunday, 03-September-2006, 22:10:07 Sony's HDR-HC3 sets the bar very high, letting consumers film home movies in stunning HD quality. Incredible video quality. Excellent sound. Performs well in extreme lighting scenarios. No included software. Instructions should feature more about the benefits and details of high-definition video. Menus are still not very clear. Cheaper than its predecessor, but still pricey. And the quality of the video blew standard definition footage out of the water. Simply put, the HC3 sets a new standard in the consumer camcorder arena. (1060 clicks)
Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1
Sunday, 03-September-2006, 21:44:59 With the Xacti VPC-HD1, Sanyo joins Sony in the high-definition camcorder market. The device, which shoots 720p HD video, is very portable, measuring 3.1 by 4.7 by 1.4 inches and weighing only 7.4 ounces. (without battery). In fact, it reminds me of the diminutive Samsung SC-X105L MPEG-4 Sports Camcorder. Based on the performance we saw in Sony's recent HD camcorder, the HDR-HC3 HDV 1080i Handycam, we were prepared to be blown away. Unfortunately, my lab and real-world tests revealed that this camcorder's video quality is mediocre at best. And with a street price of $800, so it costs too much for such lackluster results.
